SYNOPSIS:
The story of RED CLIFF takes place in 208 AD in China during the Han Dynasty. Despite the presence of an emperor, Han Xiandi, China was then divided into many warring states.
The ambitious Prime Minister Cao Cao, by using the Emperor as his puppet, waged war on a kingdom in the west, Xu, ruled by the emperor’s uncle, Liu Bei. Cao Cao’s ultimate goal was to wipe out all the kingdoms and install himself as Emperor to a unified China. Liu Bei sent his military advisor Zhuge Liang as an envoy to the Wu Kingdom in the south, trying to persuade its ruler Sun Quan into joining forces. There he met Wu’s Viceroy Zhou Yu, and the two became friends amidst this uneasy alliance.
Enraged to learn that the two kingdoms have become allies, Cao Cao sent an army of eight hundred thousand soldiers and two thousand ships down south, hoping to kill two birds with one stone. Cao Cao’s army set up camp at Crow Forest, across the Yangtze River from Red Cliff, where the allies were stationed.
With the food supply running short, and the army vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao’s, the allies seemed doomed. Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang had to rely on their combined wisdom to turn the tide of battle. Numerous battles of wits and forces, on land and on water, eventually culminated into the most famous battle in Chinese history, where two thousand ships were burned, and the course of China’s history was changed forever. That was the Battle of Red Cliff.
REVIEW:
"...One of the distractions from enjoying this movie would be the casting choice and (largely to personal preference) some actors felt that they had been miscast, especially for the role of Cao Cao and Zhuge Liang. Although the respectable Zhang Fengyi was great in Farewell to my Concubine, it felt that he lacks the scheming and cunningness to pull off this role. The same with Takeshi Kaneshiro’s portrayal of Zhuge Liang which often invite stray thoughts of "What if Chow Yun Fatt had played this role or what if Tony Leung had not took over Zhou Yu’s role instead"
Beside the miscast, it felt that various characters had been mishandled. It’s obvious that Zhou Yu is the central character in Red Cliff and Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Zhao Zilong are just supporting characters but this film made it felt that it was relegating these iconic characters to nothing more than mere capable fighters at Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang’s disposal. In a way, it felt that it took away some of the majestic aura that these few characters had long established in our mind.
Several situations that compel the various characters to act also didn’t felt that compelling at all. Such as Sun Quan (Chang Cheng)’s reluctant and dilemma in going to war with Cao Cao felt very naively handled. Especially in a scene when Sun Quan had to face his fears in the form of a tiger and the filmmakers chose to impose Cao Cao’s face over the beast to force the point down the audience throat. The fight with the tiger was also unimpressive in the age of spectacular special effects and the lack of scenes between the actor and the tiger in the same shot stood out as a sore thumb.
What Red Cliff succeeded was breathing new life to Zhou Yu’s character who is known to be a petty General who was jealous of Zhuge Liang’s capabilities. Tony Leung and Director John Woo had came together to paint a more endearing aspect for Zhou Yu. From his appreciation of music to how he leaded the first major battle in this epic was rather intriguing and impressive to someone who is unaware of his role in The Three Kingdom.
Fans of John Woo will be also be please to find that the director’s trademark “Slow Mo” action sequences and ballistic ballet with bullets had been proficiently replaced with horse ridding sequences and weapons such as spears and swords. Even the ever present white doves serve a more useful function besides its usual running away from gunfights in director John Woo’s movies..."

SYNOPSIS:
Bitter over an unforeseen defeat to rival states Shu and Wu, Cao Cao (Fengyi Zhang) of the Wei Kingdom is confident that his million-man fleet will crush the under-manned alliance once and for all.
An epidemic and seasickness cripple Cao Cao's men, however, postponing D-day. Gen. Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) take the time to demoralize their enemy, and trick Cao Cao into practically giving them 100,000 arrows and even beheading his top generals.
Nevertheless, the allies are still seriously outnumbered and can only increase their chances of winning by attacking with fire. A northwester, however, compromises their plan, as the flames would blow back in their direction. Zhuge Liang, foreseeing an astronomical movement that will change the circumstances, urges the allies to postpone the attack. Meanwhile, Xiao Qiao (Chiling Lin), Zhou Yu's beautiful wife whom Cao Cao lusts after, heads to the enemy line with a plan of her own.

REVIEW:
" After a rather helpful and stylishly executed recap of the events of part one, we are thrown immediately back into the thick of the action, or rather, into the middle of a game of football. Cao Cao’s troops are killing time with a little competitive Cuju as they wait for the real battle of Red Cliff to kick off. While Sun Quan (Chang Chen) and his coalition forces formulate their plan of action across the bay, his sister, the plucky Shang Xiang (Zhao Wei) is seen masquerading as an enemy soldier, intermittently sending updates to Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) via carrier pigeon of the state of the enemy’s superior forces. And the news is encouraging. A typhoid epidemic is sweeping through the camp yielding heavy casualties. While some of the allied generals see this as an opportune moment to strike, noble Zhou Yu (Tony Leung) sees this as a dishonourable tactic. It is not beneath Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) to use this viral outbreak to his advantage and loads his infected dead onto rafts and sends them over to his enemies’ camp. This act of germ warfare has a crippling effect on the already far weaker coalition, and causes a number of the generals to pull their troops out and head for home.
Both sides are drawn into a tactical battle of wits, reluctant to mount a full scale assault while their forces are so ravaged by illness. Cao Cao sends an old student friend of Zhou Yu’s, to persuade him into surrendering. His wife Xiao Qiao (Lin Chi Ling) meanwhile, believes her perfected tea ceremony skills may have diplomatic skills and is prepared to go to unparalleled lengths to prove her point. Zhou Yu is only too aware of Cao Cao’s reputation for wooing his enemies’ wives and has no intention of letting Xiao Qiao out of his sight. Zhuge, meanwhile, applies his tactical expertise and almost godlike understanding of meteorology to not only sap vital ammunition from the Han troops, but also facilitate a devious plot to spread paranoia and distrust through the enemy camp.
To say that John Woo has delivered on the promise of Red Cliff part one is to understate the obvious. This second half is a master class in ratcheting up tension, before unleashing a furious fireball of a finale. The battle sequences are expertly handled, showcasing an epic spectacle, while remembering to hone in on the plethora of individuals Woo has spent the last 4+ hours establishing. Everyone is given their moment in the sun, from Nakamura Shido’s grenade testing to Zhao Wei’s, quite literal, big reveal.
There are moments of exuberant bombast which verge on the ridiculous – a stirring speech by Cao Cao seemingly curing typhoid for one – but fans of John Woo will find many of his usual signature themes and devices in attendance. An abundance of white doves throughout, borderline homoerotic declarations of loyalty, brotherhood and mutual admiration (Takeshi and Tony even get to reprise their guzheng duet) and a climactic five-way standoff that would make Tarantino go weak at the knees.
Zhang Fengyi makes Cao Cao a complex and charismatic villain, more than simply a power-hungry politician whose motives can be easily swept aside. Takeshi Kaneshiro is in his element, wrapping his silken tongue around Zhuge’s poetic musings and meditations, and Tony Leung is dependable as ever as the unflappable Zhou Yu. The real revelation in part two is Lin Chi-Ling, who easily eschews those early fears that she may not be robust enough to carry the part of Xiao Qiao – the trophy wife with a lot more gumption than her mantra of “make tea not war” conveys.
Sadly, Chang Chen is again criminally underused, arguably given even less to do this time round than in part one, but the film’s biggest crime is the sidelining of Hu Jun as Zhao Yun. Admittedly his character is “injured” for much of this second half, but the image of him in battle, baby wrapped tightly to his back in a wonderful homage to Hard Boiled, remains one of Red Cliff’s enduring images. He manages to briefly claw his way on screen during the big finale but it was shame after his iconic role in the preceding film.
The criticisms, however, are far outweighed by the praise. Red Cliff achieves where other recent Chinese epics have failed – less melodramatic than The Warlords, more exciting than Battle of Wits - staging grandiose battle sequences that are coherent and genuinely exciting while simultaneously developing numerous characters beyond simply their job description. John Woo should have his passport confiscated immediately and never be allowed to leave Hong Kong again, Red Cliff is undeniable proof that the man can still rock our world, but really should work from home. REVIEW:
" ...The pairing up of the charismatic Jang Donggun and handsome idol Won Bin is amazingly effective. The inner struggle of JinTae, a man of few words but conveyed successfully by Jang’s brooding eyes and compelling body skills. Won Bin who in the past has acted only in Korean Drama serials (“Taegukgi” is his second big screen feature) have shown tremendous potential opposite Jang. If both of them were unable to convince the audience, the movie would be a straight flop seeing that their screen time occupied at least 98% of the 140 minutes movie. The rest of the supporting cast did a marvelous job as well. Due to the limitations of the plot, most characters are left mostly unexplored citing the case of Lee EunJoo who portrayed the pitiful, wife-to-be of JinTae. Towards the last act of the movie, a little portion of the communist issue gets lengthy and nearly falls to the trap of being too emotional and melodrama.
Technically, “Taegukgi” has achieved great heights. Possessing the highest production budget (US$13 million) in Korean movie industry. The efforts which go to the props, costumes, locations, ammunition, armored vehicles and extras are comparable to a Hollywood production. Even the ongoing seasons and unpredictable weather are captured beautifully on screen. With the exception of the CG enhanced fighter planes which looked too cheesy even from afar. Guess the comfort of engaging ILM is out of the question. Apparently, a tremendous amount of research is done to ensure the authenticity of the numerous details.
Did I left out the battle sequences? Nope, we are coming to that. For those who like plenty of battle sequences, well, there are plenty. Multiple explosions, mutilated bodies, gunshots and hand-to-hand combats graced the screen for almost every 15 minutes of screen time. Though it would be better if the cinematographer can actually pulled back the camera a bit so as to allow the audience to indulge in the spectacle.
Director Kang JeGyu has proven he is not just an ordinary box-office director. But one that possess the heart to weave a tale that is heart-warming and touching to the core of many. Next time, don’t dismiss your gifts from your love ones as simply gifts, a pen or a pair of shoes can do wonders to memories (I wouldn’t want to give away anything here, go watch the movie). “Brotherhood” as it is re-titled here locally, is a touching tale worth telling and watching. If there is only one movie that is going to put Korean movie industry to the world. This is going to be it! ... "

REVIEW:
" Directed by the Russian Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of the Mountains), Mongol -- which features an all-Asian cast and was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar this year -- is a much more lasting work, doing justice to a man rivaled only by Alexander the Great in terms of mythical stature.
Oliver Stone tried encapsulating Alexander's life into one movie, only to discover the task was impossible. Bodrov knows better, using Mongol -- the first of an intended trilogy -- to center on Genghis Khan's formative years, when he still went by the name Temudgin and had not yet led Mongolia's warring tribes and factions to consolidate into a formidable whole.
Beginning with his boyhood, Mongol depicts Temudgin as a proud, defiant, indomitable warrior (charismatically played by the Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano) and doting husband to his wife Borte (Khula Chulunn). Or at least as doting as time allows, since he is frequently busy leading armies into bloody battle, rotting away in dank prisons or avoiding assassins' arrows and swords.
Bodrov, who has shot the film in widescreen format with the thunder and fury of an old-school Hollywood epic, is not interested in a historically precise recounting of Temudgin's life. Less-than-honorable incidents (such as the childhood murder of his half-brother) are conveniently omitted, and God himself (in the form of a wolf) intervenes in the action not once, but twice, to save Temudgin from a certain death.
Only in Temudgin's growing rivalry with his brother Jamukha (the excellent Honglei Sun), an equally charismatic and dangerous warrior, does Mongol really strike any dramatic complexity. The rest of the film is as black-and-white as a western, edging too closely to hagiography to be taken seriously as a work of historical fiction. But the battle sequences are tremendous, and the performances are captivating, making for the sort of rousing, giant-scale entertainment that a figure as towering as Genghis Khan deserves. "

SYNOPSIS:
In the DMZ separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier. But the 11 bullets found in the bodies, together with the 5 remaining bullets in the assassin’s magazine clip, amount to 16 bullets for a gun that should normally hold 15 bullets. The investigating Swiss/Swedish team from the neutral countries overseeing the DMZ suspects that another, unknown party was involved - all of which points to some sort of cover up. The truth is much simpler and much more tragic.
REVIEW:
" For the second year in a row, the Korean film industry has struck gold with a movie about North Korea. Many expected Joint Security Area (or JSA) to do well at the box office, given the current level of interest in North Korean affairs, but it has done much more than that, spawning headlines and breaking box-office records with ease. The film drew close to half a million viewers in Seoul alone its first week. On the following Saturday it set a one-day box office record, drawing 104,000 viewers in the capital. It broke the one million admissions mark in only 15 days -- last year it took Shiri 21 days to reach the same mark. By early 2001 it had become the best-selling film in Korean history (though it was eclipsed by Friend a few months later).
Joint Security Area Park Chan-wook's film opens with a shooting in the truce village of Panmunjom which leaves two North Korean soldiers dead and one South Korean soldier wounded. With each country giving conflicting reports on what happened, the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) is asked to send in a Swiss military officer to conduct an investigation. After her arrival, however, she finds that no one is willing to talk to her, and the soldiers involved all seem to be hiding some secret...
JSA is described as a mystery/ human drama, and its structure is clearly divided into two parts: the investigation by Korean-Swiss Major Sophie Jean, and an extended flashback to the incident between the soldiers. I think most would agree that the film's biggest strength is the flashback, with actors Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-heon excelling in their roles. This part of the film also features some breathtaking cinematography for the scenes that take place along the Demilitarized Zone.
The mystery element contains less tension, particularly if the viewer knows too much about the plot beforehand. Attention is focused not so much on what happened, but why. This part also contains a large number of scenes in English, which may have to be redubbed if the film opens in English-speaking territories. Nonetheless it has been noted by critics and audience members alike for its rare casting of a female actor (Lee Young-ae) in a non-romantic part.
The producers of the film spared no expense in recreating the setting around Panmunjom. Since shooting at the actual site would obviously not be permitted, Myung Film built a 90% replica of the village of Panmunjom at a cost of some $800,000. The site can be visited to this day at the Seoul Cinema Complex. JSA is also notable for being the first Korean film ever to be shot on Super 35mm film, a special format used in some Hollywood blockbusters that allows for a wide screen (1:2.35) with very clear definition.
The film has won more or less unanimous praise from every sector of Korean society, with one exception: the army. Many in the military have derided the film as pure fantasy, based on an event which could never happen in real life (probably true). In a bizarre incident on September 26, twenty older members of the JSA Veterans' Association stormed into the office of Myung Film, breaking windows and physically threatening the employees of the company. They demanded that the production company issue a public apology to the army and insert notices at the beginning and end of the movie stating that it is a work of fiction. After four hours, the employees of Myung Film acquiesced, and despite vocal objection from the film industry, the group's demands are being met.
Some have compared this film to Shiri because of its superficial resemblance, but it really is a much different work. As relations with North Korea change and the two nations draw closer together, this film perhaps serves best as a record of South Koreans' fears and hopes for reconciliation. "

REVIEW:
" Based on a novel, Chen wrote the screenplay for this “cat and mouse” game which engagingly provides a glimpse for today’s audiences of what it means to feel nationalistic pride in the past. It does evoke that sense of devotion and loyalty, and makes you wonder whether a local film can stir up the same feeling? While this doubt’s answers lies in the vast differences in culture and history, one cannot overlook the impressive production values of this film boasting Feng Xiaogang’s (If You Are The One) name as its executive producer.
The two hour movie manages to bring together some credible names to create an authentic look for the movie. Jake Pollock (Yang Yang)’s lush cinematography enhances the intricate costume design by Tim Yip (Red Cliff). The comfortable pacing of the editing, the well executed soundscape and the entrancing production design will mesmerize viewers from beginning to end.
And thankfully, the storytelling does not disappoint too. The gradual build up of the plot culminates in a finale which may be arguably predictable, but works well for a film of this genre. Credit goes to the spot on cast, all of whom shine in their own character. There is Zhang Hanyu (Assembly) as a long suffering militarist, Huang Xiaoming (Sniper) as the Japanese soldier, Alec Su (L-O-V-E) as a lieutenant and Li Bingbing (The Forbidden Kingdom). Zhang and Huang exudes charisma in their pain inflicted roles, Su creates quite a show with his portrayal of an effeminate officer and Li makes viewers feel her agony with a unique aura of quietness. There is nothing to fault with the acting, as it is with Zhou Xun’s (Perhaps Love) code breaker character. Effortlessly moving through the film with her distinctive allure, she is no doubt one of the greatest movie actresses of our time.
There is something about movies which help people like this reviewer to learn more about history. And despite being a fictional thriller, this finely made production has left this reviewer wondering what it was like to live in a time when you lived for your country. "
